Tips for Preventing Rosacea Flare-Ups

By | Age Spots

Do you sometimes look in the mirror and see that your cheeks and/or nose look red and inflamed. Does that inflammation sometimes come with small red bumps that give your skin a rough and unappealing texture? If so, you’re most likely suffering from rosacea, and you’re definitely not alone.

Doctors and researchers are not sure exactly what causes rosacea, but they have been able to pinpoint several common triggers that cause flare-ups. We also know of a few treatments and skincare tips that can help prevent rosacea from flaring up, even if you’re exposed to one of your triggers.

Avoid Overly Spicy Foods

Spicy foods tend to open up the pores, but they can also trigger your capillaries to enlarge and cause your face to become flushed. That’s a pretty normal reaction for almost anyone, but if you’re prone to rosacea, it can lead to a real flare-up with bumpy, rough skin that’s hard to cover up.

Stay Away from Extreme Temperatures

Some people’s rosacea will worsen when they get too hot. Others experience it more in colder temperatures. If you can avoid exposing your skin to either very hot or very cold temperatures, you may be able to prevent a lot of breakouts and flare-ups.

Don’t Wear Cheap Makeup – And Check the Ingredients!

You may find yourself reaching for a bottle of foundation to cover up a rosacea flare-up, but be careful what’s in it because you could be making things much worse. In particular, avoid oil-based makeup that contains menthol, alcohol, eucalyptus oil, and/or witch hazel. We recommend using a high quality cleanser and moisturizer every day to keep your pores clear and protect your skin.

Stay out of the Sun

Sun exposure is honestly bad news for everyone, but especially for anyone who suffers from rosacea. Not only do dangerous UV rays wreak havoc on your skin, but they can also trigger your rosacea. Imagine a sunburn and a rosacea breakout at the same time. It’s not a pleasant thought, is it?

Eat More Leafy Greens and Probiotics

One theory behind rosacea is that it’s caused by an imbalance in the bacteria living in the body. Whether this is actually the case or not, eating more leafy greens, like kale and spinach, and taking in more probiotics have been shown to be effective tactics in avoiding flare-ups. And these are healthy diet choices anyway, so it can’t hurt to add more healthy greens, vegetables, yogurt, and/or kefir into your diet.
