Are Botox Treatments Safe on Wrinkles and Acne?

By | Botox Treatment, Skin, Treatment

It may seem like an odd question, but the truth is that the combination of wrinkles and acne on the same face is actually more common than you may know. As our hormones change with age, or our lifestyles cause premature signs of aging to show up, it’s easy to see how someone might have both these conditions on their face at the same time. So you may be wondering if a person can get Botox to treat their wrinkles when they have acne, and what that treatment might do to the acne.

Botox Make Up

Botox, if you don’t already know, is a prescription injection that is made up of the toxin botulinum type A. This toxin is derived from bacteria, but is totally safe to inject into the body. The way this toxin works is to block enzymes in the nerve endings, causing the nerve endings to lose the ability to understand the signal to move the muscle that was targeted. Basically, the muscle becomes paralyzed because the nerve ending cannot understand the command to move it.

Now, Botox doesn’t entirely block out the nerve ending, resulting in any sort of permanent paralysis. Instead, it just minimizes the unconscious movement of the muscle, ensuring that wrinkles and fine lines do not develop.

Can Botox Be Used If You Have Wrinkles?

As you can see above, Botox does not affect the surface of the skin or your pores – but rather the muscles and the nerve endings within the flesh. This means that it is perfectly safe to use Botox if you have acne. It will not cause any adverse reactions (providing you aren’t allergic), cause you to break out, or anything like that.

Botox is also safe to use when you are using other acne-reduction treatments or products. Again, because it has nothing to do with the surface of your skin, there is no reason why you couldn’t get a peel, use a prescription acne product, or anything of the sort, before or after getting Botox. In fact, chemical peels are a great way to help treat acne that also works to fight wrinkles, assisting the Botox in creating a youthful, smooth appearance. If you have both wrinkles and adult acne, and you are getting Botox to treat the wrinkles, a chemical peel to assist this process and treat the acne is a great idea.

Botox and Acne Scars

If you have struggled with acne your whole adult life, there is a chance you also have a few acne scars or pockmarks on your face. Botox may be able to help you reduce the appearance of these scars while you are treating those fine lines and wrinkles.

Researchers have experimented with combinations of Botox and dermal fillers to smooth out and plump up scarred or pockmarked skin, to help patients see less noticeable scars. When Botox is injected into the area, the muscle contractions that pull on the scar, making it more noticeable, relax, allowing the dermal filler to then smooth out the area.

This is still being researched, but it’s a great example of how Botox is constantly evolving to meet the needs of adults today. If you want to learn more, contact us via our website, or give us a call at 817-427-3700.

Rejuvenate Your Skin with Botox Treatments at Juvia Med Spa

By | Botox Treatment

When you think about Botox injections, you probably picture celebrities with comically frozen faces and a plastic-like sheen over their skin. And while this effect does wear off shortly, Botox should not be thought of as only a muscle paralyzer. People who have used Botox to halt the formation of wrinkles or sagging should know that Botox does far more than just slow the appearance of aging. Botox can actually rejuvenate the skin, turning back time and allowing you to enjoy younger, healthier skin.

It’s All About the Proteins

The reason that Botox treatment can actually allow the skin to “grow younger” is because it promotes the production of two very important proteins – elastin and collagen. These are the components that cause skin to feel firm and tight, but still retain flexibility. As we age, and repeatedly use our facial muscles, we lose the elasticity that allows skin to stay young and smooth. By promoting the regeneration of these proteins, Botox could actually create skin that no longer needs Botox at all – it will be firm and wrinkle-free on its own.

Not All Results Are the Same

Botox injections can indeed rejuvenate the skin. However, not everyone will experience the same jaw-dropping results. If a person has been a heavy smoker all their adult life, has been a habitual tanner for many years, or has spent decades in the sun without any protection from UV rays, it is unlikely that Botox alone will provide the results that we’re describing here. The basic cellular structure of the skin may be too damaged to regenerate the collagen and elastin necessary to improve the skin’s appearance.

The important thing is that it is never too late to start taking care of your skin. If you think you may want to give Botox a try, now or in the future, but you smoke, tan in tanning beds, or spend a lot of time in the sun without protection, now is the time to change your habits to promote better skin health on a cellular level.

Other Skin Rejuvenating Procedures

At Juvia Med Spa, we offer an additional treatment beyond Botox that patients can choose instead. This injection, known as Dysport, is a slightly different ingredient, but it works in the same way that the Botox injection does. In many cases, Dysport is the go-to injection for the wrinkles caused by furrowing your brow line. In fact, many actresses and models get this injection even before the appearance of these worry lines, to help reduce the formation of the lines in the first place.

The reason that Dysport is so often chosen is that it works much faster than Botox, and it has a greater spread. Everyone’s facial structure is different, and the area where their wrinkles or sagging skin may be will be different, too. Dysport often seems to produce more natural looking results, with less of the “frozen face” issue that is so often caused by Botox. Just like Botox, Dysport may also be able to rejuvenate the skin’s natural firming proteins, helping you look younger, naturally.

Which Should I Choose?

It’s hard to decide between Botox and Dysport for many of our patients. Botox has a proven track record that is very well-known; if you’ve considered any kind of injection skin treatment at all, you have heard of Botox. The fact that we now know that it helps rejuvenate skin proteins for naturally healthier skin is a big draw as well.

But Dysport is just as attractive, even if it is not as well-known. Avoiding the less-than-natural appearance that Botox can initially cause is often an important bonus for many patients. And faster results mean that you’ll be able to look your best for any upcoming special event. To help you find the treatment that is best for you, we have many before and after pictures of previous patients who have gotten Dysport and Botox in our Fort Worth location and surrounding areas.

Ready to Look Younger and Feel Better?

As more treatments and scientific breakthroughs in skin care come to light, it’s great to know that a basic Botox injection can actually have such a profound effect on the skin. If you’re ready to look younger, and feel more confident with yourself, we can offer the treatment that is best for your skin. Schedule a consultation to discuss options for sagging skin, wrinkles, or skin that simply doesn’t look as young as it could.

Learn the Main Difference Between Botox and Dysport

By | Botox Treatment

If you’ve been paying attention to beauty and anti-aging trends for the past twenty years or so, you’re probably very familiar with Botox – the most popular muscle relaxing, anti-aging injectable on the market today. However, Botox isn’t the only product available that’s derived from the botulinum A toxin to relax muscles and erase or reduce the appearance of expression lines on your face.

First approved by the FDA in 2009, Dysport has become almost as popular as Botox with patients who want to look and feel younger by getting rid of the fine lines and wrinkles that form around their mouth, eyes, nose, and brow when they make extreme facial expressions.

So what’s the difference? How does Dysport stack up against Botox? Are they basically the same injectable under different names? While both of these products are highly effective, there are a few key differences between the two that patients should be aware of.

How Dysport and Botox Differ

According to some patients, Botox has a longer duration of efficacy than Dysport, but this has not been proven in any clinical studies. The fact is that it may simply work better for some patients than others. It has been shown, however, that Dysport does have a faster onset than Botox, and its effects can be seen starting in two to five days, as opposed to four to seven days for Botox.

Because Dysport has a smaller molecular makeup, it tends to diffuse more than Botox, which can be a pro for some patients and a con for others. If you’re looking for very localized muscle relaxation, then Botox is probably the better choice. If you want more generalized relaxation (e.g., if you’re treating expression lines across the forehead), Dysport could be the better option.

Some physicians maintain that you need to use more Dysport to get the same effects as a smaller dose of Botox, but again this has not been proven and is still very debatable. Other than these minor differences, the two injectables are very similar and have very close results.

The Method of Injection Matters More Than the Injectable

With that in mind, the most important thing to consider when choosing a muscle relaxing injectable like Botox or Dysport is that the method of injection is actually much more important than which brand of injectable you choose. With traditional needles, the process is slower, involves more discomfort, and can cause bruising. With microcannulas (like we use at Juvia Med Spa), diffusion is made easier, and the whole process is more comfortable and more effective. Plus, there’s a much smaller chance of bruising.
