Age spots are a nearly inevitable part of aging, hence their name, and though harmless, they are something that few of us enjoy. Due mostly to sun exposure, they show up readily on the chest, hands, face, shoulders, back and neck. They appear because our skin begins generating more of the cells known as melanocytes, turning the skin darker.
So, understanding what they are and that they are harmless may be appreciated, but their actual presence on our skin is usually not. Fortunately, we are here to tell you how to fight age spots with natural treatments, and most of them can be found right in your kitchen. Most of them, however, will cause age spots to fade, but not to disappear altogether. If you wish to be permanently free of them, you will need to turn to professionals for treatment.
Lemons and Exfoliation
Full of citric acid, lemons are naturally great at bleaching everything from hair to skin. Their high acid content also exfoliates by removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells. To fight age spots with lemon, just squeeze half of a lemon into a small vessel, dip a cotton ball into the lemon and dab the age spots with the juice – leaving it for 30 minutes or longer. Do this two times each day, in 60 days or so you will see lightening.
Vinegar and Lightening
Apple cider vinegar is the ideal choice for fighting age spots with natural treatments. It is full of AHAs or alpha hydroxy acids, which are great for lightening age spots. You can blend it with a few drops of olive oil if you don’t want to dry out your skin or just apply it directly to the age spots, leaving it for 20 minutes or less. If your skin stings afterward, do mix with oil on the next application.
Horseradish and Pigmentation
High in natural vitamin C, horseradish has shown a remarkable ability to reduce melanin production. It also contains something known as glucosinolate that is great for eliminating waste from the body and increasing circulation – so it increases circulation that can remove the dead cells and lighten the age spot.
To use this, you need to grind a piece of fresh horseradish into a paste (do this only when you can open all the windows as the power of horseradish is well known). Then apply it to the area for 20 minutes and rinse away well. Do this three times each week and you will see changes in 30 days.
Buttermilk and Acid
Buttermilk is the least irritating natural remedy for age spots and has lactic acid known for lightening the skin and leaving it soft and supple. To use just dunk a cotton ball into the milk and apply it to the age spot. Let sit for 20 minutes and then rinse away. Yogurt works in the same way and even offers a bit of exfoliation. Apply in the same way, but do so only once a day, or even overnight.
Each of the options suggested here take at least four weeks, and require you to be very consistent in daily applications. They work by exfoliating and lightening the skin, even going as far as slowing down the production of melanin. If, however, you want faster treatments that do not demand daily applications, you can always visit Juvia Med Spa to discover their many age spot removal methods that are just as effective, but much faster.
